Shy pup..how do i get him to open up?

try lots and lots of cuddling....if he wants to stay in one spot then make that spot near you as much as possible.....this will form a bond and then when you go around to different places your dog will want to be near you and will start to follow you al around....as for the walks you need to teach him to settle doen when he is all sniffing and stuff....use a lease witha body harness ( so no choking) and keep the leash very short and teach him to walk NEXT TO YOU not in front of you!
