Hinduism isn't necessarily polytheistic. It seems so to those unfamiliar with the religion, but in fact all of those gods are avatars, or aspects, of the Creator god Brahma. They understand that Brahma cannot be comprehended, so they take aspects of Brahma and give them representation. The worship of the Greek and Roman pantheons would be polytheistic, as is Norse religions. Polytheism comes from the Greek Poly- meaning many, and theo meaning god.
